Why CHS Needs You
Foster youth are currently facing tough choices as they age out of the foster care system. Knowing that their 18th birthday means they are no longer eligible for most assistance and must find a new place to live, these youth face desperate and daunting decisions.

The Treasure Coast community and CHS are part of the solution to ensuring that our foster children learn how to succeed in society, breaking the cycle of child abuse and neglect.

  • CHS is a private, not-for-profit organization, not a branch of the Florida Department of Children and Families. Every dollar received from fundraising and special assistance programs goes toward serving children and families in our care.
  • By age 18, foster children in the state of Florida are no longer eligible for state-funded assistance.
  • We currently serve more than 9,000 children along the Treasure Coast annually.
  • Foster children need continuous care and consistent direction. Statistics prove that while youth may stay out of trouble while in foster care, desperate survival requirements create a different environment after they turn 18. Homelessness, early pregnancies, crime and victimization are not uncommon.
  • Young adults ages 18 to 23 are the fastest-growing segment of Florida’s homeless population.
  • Studies suggest that after leaving foster care, youth with adult mentors perform better in school, stay out of the criminal justice system and are more likely to gain employment.
  • The new center will assist youth in earning a higher education and in finding jobs, stable housing and financial support, as well as other life necessities.
  • Through the Transitional Living Program, former foster youth will have a far greater chance of becoming self-sufficient adults.
